ROMA ANTONINIANUS DEFİNESİ

Turan GÖKYILDIRIM

Definenin Müzeye Geliş Şekli:

1991 yılında, iki büyük define, İstanbul’dan Almanya - Münih’e posta yolu ile kaçırılırken polis tarafından yakalanıp İstanbul Arkeoloji Müzeleri’ne teslim edilmiştir.

Bunlardan birincisi, Ermeni Artaxiad Hanedanı’na (MÖ 2-1. yy) ait 387 adet bronz sikkeden oluşan define (Müze env. no 1561/16-402), ikincisi ise bu makalede tanıtılan 3546 adet gümüş antoninianustan oluşan Roma (MS 3. yy) sikke definesidir (Müze env. no 1561/448-3993).

A ROMAN ANTONINIANUS COIN HOARD FROM TURKEY – 1991

In 1991, two big coin hoards on their way to Munich-Germany from İstanbul were intercepted in the post by the police and delivered to the İstanbul Archaeological Museum. The first hoard consisted of 387 bronze coins from the Artaxiad Dynasty of Armenia (Mueum inv. no 1561/16-402). The second hoard consisted of 3546 Roman antoninianus coins (Museum inv. no 1561/448-3993) which we will present here.

The coins have been presented according to the following system :

The emperors and empresses are in chronological order.

The legends on the reverse faces are in alphabetical order.

A short description is given of the types of the reverse faces.

For statistical purposes, the number of coins of each type has been specified.

In general the mints have been identified in the RIC, problematic mints and mints ot found in the sources have been identified by comparison with similar specimens in the same group.

The legends and types on the obverse faces are referred to similar ones in RIC and C (H. Cohen). Photographs have been provided only of those specimens for which references have not been found.

The coins were minted within a time span of 25 years.

Although the coins are of unknown provenance, the fact that a large nummber of them were minted in Antioch indicates that they originate from south or south-east Turkey.
